Overview of Therapy
Many of my clients have been in therapy before, but many have not. Regardless of which category you fall into, therapy is different with each person and each therapist. The purpose of therapy is to make positive changes in your life. This is accomplished with several steps that aren’t necessarily in order.
What is EMDR / How does EMDR Work
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy approach that has been extensively shown to be effective for the treatment of trauma. To date, EMDR has helped hundreds of my clients heal many types of psychological stress that is caused by underlying trauma.
Therapist vs. Life Coach
I often get the question about the difference between a therapist and a life coach. There is a lot of overlap in what a therapist and a life coach do, but also some very important distinctions.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) was founded by Aaron Beck in the ’60s. Since then, the theory/therapy has been gaining popularity and use in the community and is now, by my best estimate, the most commonly used therapeutic treatment. I am one of many therapists that integrate this into my practice, notably for depression and anxiety related issues, but for much more.
Homework and Bibliotherapy
Homework is an important part of counseling. As with everyone else in life, how much work you put in to something matters a great deal. Just like with school, both going to class and learning with the teacher, as well as practicing what’s learned in class, are both very important.
Does EMDR Work?
I’ve included some studies below, notably meta-analyses which use numerous studies findings to produce better and more reliable results, that highlight our current understanding of EMDR and its effectiveness.
Codependency
Codependency is generally characterized by sacrificing your needs in order to try to meet the needs of others. Certainly sacrificing our needs to help others is part of being human and having friendships/relationships, but codependency is when it becomes too sacrificial and overwhelming. It’s associated with passivity and feelings of shame, low self-worth, anxiety, exhaustion, or insecurity. The short version catchphrase is “I need you to need me”.
HRT Letters
A Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or Sexual Reassignment Surgery (SRS) letter is a document that signifies a therapist has met with a person who wants to start transitioning via hormone replacement therapy and that person is able to give informed consent as to what SRS/HRT is, the process, and a general overall psychological assessment
Depression Counseling
I provide counseling for those suffering from depression and who have a desire to be free from it. If you’re feeling down, fatigued, bored, less motivated, stressed, upset, or irritable then you might be experiencing depression.
Mindfulness
Mindfulness has been becoming more and more mainstream and being applied to all kinds of things. Mindfulness therapy. Mindfulness walking. Mindfulness yoga. So what is mindfulness?
