HRT Letters
What is an HRT or SRS letter and how do I get one?
A Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) or Sexual Reassignment Surgery (SRS) letter is a document that signifies a therapist has met with a person who wants to start transitioning via hormone replacement therapy and that person is able to give informed consent as to what SRS/HRT is, the process, and a general overall psychological assessment. Unfortunately resources for the transgender/gender non-conforming community can be very lacking and it can be a struggle for clients to find a therapist that can help with this. If you’re in the Nashville, Murfreesboro, or general middle Tennessee area I can help as I provide that service to clients.
Informed Consent
Informed consent means you are knowledgeable about the process, risks and limitations and you sign your acknowledgment of this. Most of the clients that come to me have done their share of research, which is fantastic! I always say the more information the better. That said, we would review your knowledge so I’m able to speak fully to the fact that you’re aware of this information and are of sound mind to give informed consent.
What Questions will I be Asked?
I will get some general background information (age, desired path for transitioning, etc.), and then I will want to explore your present and historical gender experience. I approach this from a very open and non-judgmental perspective. I enjoy hearing people’s life story and joining them in sharing it. For clarification, I am not a medical doctor. We can discuss the physical part of transitioning from medical online resources, but I am primarily concerned with your emotional health. Transitioning can be a difficult process for some, especially with negative societal or family influences.
Next Steps
If you are local to me I encourage you to reach out so we can schedule a meeting. If you are not local then possibly reach out to local LGBTQ+ groups (e.g. PFLAG).
WPATH and ICATH:
ICATH (Informed Consent for access to Transgender Health) and WPATH(World Professional Association for Transgender Health) provide information, guidelines, and recommendations about HRT, SRS, and transitioning. I encourage you to check out their websites to learn more.
