Secular Therapy
Finding the right fit with a therapist is one of the most important aspects of counseling. For a lot of my clients there was a struggle in finding the right fit in one particular area – religion. I think it’s important for you to have a safe space to be able to talk about your beliefs, or lack there-of, without fear of judgment or repercussion.
Secular therapy is accepting of all people regardless of their religious, or non-religious, beliefs. It can be difficult finding mental health professionals who don’t bring religion in to session. Many therapists integrate or insert spiritual, religious or New Age ideas into therapy, even when they know their client is not religious. Therapy can help by giving you a non judgmental space to feel and to move past difficult feelings. As a secular therapist, we will still focus on your overall well-being the same as any other therapist, but that focus won’t come from a religious viewpoint unless you want there to be one.
Is Secular Therapy Right For Me?
Short answer: yes. Secular therapy is for everyone, which is the wonderful thing about it. Whether you’re agnostic, atheist, Christian, Hindu, Muslim, etc., secular therapy is all inclusive and non-judgmental. As a secular therapist I am knowledgeable about all major religions (and a lot of others), denominations, and of course the unique aspects of being non-religious. Secular therapy can also be great for people who are questioning their place or beliefs on religion as the therapist doesn’t push a particular viewpoint of what is “right” to believe in.
